Fatal accident after speeding and running a red light: community service and driver’s license lost

A 28-year-old Belgian woman has been given 240 hours of community service for causing a fatal accident with her car in Eindhoven. She is also not allowed to drive for a year.

According to the court in Den Bosch, she drove too fast at an intersection in March 2022 and drove through a red light. After this, the woman from Schaerbeek collided with another car. The son of the driver of this car was so injured that he died a few weeks later.

The Belgian wanted to drive from Franklin D. Rooseveltlaan to the intersection with Bisschop Bekkerslaan when things went wrong. The judge found that she was very careless and inattentive. She achieved almost 80 kilometers on a road with a speed limit of 50 kilometers per hour. She also drove through a red light.

It was the first time that the woman came into contact with the police and the judiciary. The court also noted in her favor that she was very sorry that the victim had died. It was clear from the statements she made that the accident also affected the Belgian very much.

“But,” the judge also said, “no punishment will alleviate the suffering and emptiness left behind by the victim.”
