“Mutual decision”
Bo Svensson is no longer the coach of Mainz 05. The club confirmed previous reports on Thursday evening that the Danish coach had resigned. The club emphasized that they had “decided on this step together” with sports director Christian Heidel and sports director Martin Schmidt.
The “Bild” newspaper had written about a board meeting that lasted all night, in which Svensson’s expulsion was also discussed. Ultimately, Svensson, who had initially ruled out resignation, pulled the ripcord himself.
For the time being, Jan Siewert, who previously looked after the Mainz U23s, will take over the team. With Svensson, the Rheinhessen had remained without a win in 14 first division games across the seasons. The last success so far came in April against FC Bayern (3:1). In the current season, Mainz have the weakest interim balance in the club’s history with just three points after nine match days and are bottom of the table.

“Mainz 05 owes a lot to Bo, especially the fact that we are still playing in the Bundesliga today. “In addition, we completed two more confident seasons in the Bundesliga and delighted our fans with our football,” said sports director Christian Heidel. “We have spent many hours discussing over the past few weeks how we can reverse the negative sporting trend. Unfortunately, there are always complex developments in football that can bring such successful joint work to a point where it might be better to take a new path. Bo developed this feeling himself and shared it with us.”
Svensson said: “It is very difficult for me to say goodbye, but I feel that now is the time. I have been from Mainz for 16 years. I learned a lot here, met so many great people, in the club, among the fans, in the city, my children grew up here in Mainz. The experiences will shape me for the rest of my life. But unfortunately, due to sporting developments, the time has come to realize that no individual is above the club and that all forces must now be pooled together to master the sporting situation. Unfortunately that won’t be the case with me, but unfortunately that’s how it has to be. Now more than ever, the club and team need the solidarity that has always distinguished us. “
