Climate change is an undeniable reality, and its impacts are felt in every corner of the planet. From rising sea levels to more frequent and intense extreme weather events, the climate crisis is affecting communities and ecosystems around the world.
The seriousness of the situation has led to climate change being recognized as an issue of utmost importance on the global agenda. The international community has adopted various agreements and measures to address this challenge, including the Paris Agreement, signed in 2015with the aim of limiting the increase in global temperature to below 2 degrees Celsius with respect to pre-industrial levels.
On this special day, it is essential to remember that climate change knows no borders and affects all people, regardless of their origin or geographical location. Therefore, global cooperation and collective action are essential to address this crisis with the urgency it requires.
Collective action
The International Day against Climate Change is an opportunity to raise awareness and raise awareness among society about the importance of taking measures to combat climate change and protect our environment for future generations. The transition to a low-carbon economy and the promotion of renewable energy are essential to mitigate the effects of global warming.
In this sense, various initiatives and projects are being implemented around the world to promote a more sustainable future. An example of this is the development of clean technologies, such as solar and wind energy, which are increasingly accessible and efficient. Likewise, the Electric mobility is becoming a viable option to reduce emissions of polluting gases in the transportation sector.
A sustainable world through innovation
Furthermore, strengthening resilience and adaptation to the impacts of climate change are crucial aspects to minimize damage in vulnerable communities. This implies not only actions at the global level, but also at the local level, where adequate planning and close collaboration between governments, civil society and the private sector are required. The International Day against Climate Change is also a opportunity to reflect on our daily actions and how they contribute to global warming. From responsible energy consumption to waste reduction and biodiversity protection, every small effort counts in the fight against climate change.
It is essential that all actors in society get involved in this common cause. Governments, businesses and citizens must work together to implement sustainable policies and practices that reduce our carbon emissions and promote more equitable and green development.
In this context, energy companies, such as Naturgy, also play an important role in the transition towards a more sustainable future. Some companies are investing in clean technologies, supporting renewable energy research and development and setting clear targets to reduce their own carbon emissions. But this career is not new, it has a trajectory that began in Spain a few years ago:
The role of energy companies
Naturgy, a company with more than 175 years of experience in the energy sector, has taken on the challenge of transforming its business towards the energy transition. Aware of the global challenge posed by the fight against climate change, the company has developed a 2021-2025 Sustainability Plan, where sustainability is one of the fundamental pillars.
The Sustainability Plan is based on six levers and 21 lines of action aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the Agenda 2030. Naturgy is committed to increasing the installed capacity in renewable energies, to producing or injecting carbon-neutral renewable gases and to developing intelligent and adapted energy networks to play a key role in the energy transition.
Likewise, the company works to protect biodiversity and avoid the net loss of natural capital as a strategic priority. In line with its Corporate Responsibility Policy, Naturgy is committed to being carbon neutral and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
However, Naturgy’s contribution to the transition towards a sustainable future is not limited only to its environmental objectives. The company has also been involved in community and social development projects in areas close to the areas in which it operates.
Through the Naturgy Foundation, the company carries out initiatives to improve the quality of life of local communities, promote environmental education and support social inclusion.
Naturgy has also opted for innovation and research in clean technologies, collaborating with universities and research centers to promote solutions that contribute to the energy transition. These efforts demonstrate how a company can be an active part of the change towards a more sustainable future. and how collaboration between the private sector, governments and civil society is essential to achieve significant results in the fight against climate change. However, it is important to note that International Climate Change Day is not only about celebrating the progress and efforts made so far, but also about recognizing that there is still much to do. The climate crisis remains an urgent and global threat that requires the utmost attention and action from everyone.
In addition to businesses, governments play a key role in fight against climate change. The implementation of policies and regulations that promote the decarbonization of the economy and the use of clean energy is essential to accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable future. International collaboration is also essential. Agreements and commitments made in international forums, such as the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP), must be translated into concrete actions and tangible results. Climate ambition must increase to achieve the goals set out in the Paris Agreement and limit global warming to safe levels for the planet and its people.
International Climate Change Day reminds us that we are all responsible for protecting our common home, the Earth. Each of us can contribute to this cause through small daily actions, such as reducing energy consumption, using sustainable transportation, recycling and supporting initiatives and projects that promote sustainability.
The project #BuenaHuella is an action led by Naturgy which brings together the main communication groups in the country under a single sustainability project. The key to this initiative lies in its total sustainability, since measures have been applied to reduce CO2 emissions during the content creation process and, in addition, the emissions generated through the ‘Bosque Fundación Naturgy’ reforestation project have been neutralized. . Work has been done on measuring, reducing and neutralizing the emissions of all content, following the same thematic axis aimed at explaining to the public how to reduce the carbon footprint. This project is part of the Naturgy group’s strategy to continue developing actions that help mitigate the effects of climate change and promote the energy transition towards a carbon-neutral economy.
