Spanish footballers and association set up commission

After the kissing scandal involving former association president Luis Rubiales, the Spanish footballers, the national association RFEF and the top sports authority CSD founded a joint commission. This is intended to ensure far-reaching reforms, as the Spanish Football Association announced on Monday.

Accordingly, the parties have signed a general charter that is intended to usher in “a new successful and productive phase”. The three captains Alexia Putellas, Irene Paredes and Olga Carmona signed on behalf of the women’s national team.

Among other things, it is about putting an end to sexual violence, such as that which occurred at the award ceremony after the Spanish team’s World Cup final victory: At that time, Rubiales had aggressively kissed national player Jenni Hermoso on the mouth, the case sparking a storm of indignation around the world. In the wake of the kissing scandal, the world champions around Hermoso went on strike.

“It is an important day for all of us,” said Pedro Rocha, chairman of the RFEF management committee, after the charter signing. The voices of the national players have been heard and, according to Rocha, the doors of the association are “open to every problem”.
