The American streaming platform has committed to invest 4% of its annual turnover (30 million euros) in “in French-language cinematographic creation”. The objective is to finance 10 films. Excellent news for French cinema.
30 million per year to finance 10 films in France
30 million euros… That’s the ” price to pay “ to benefit from a shorter broadcast window and a more favorable position in the media chronology in France. The new media timeline, signed on January 24, 2022 and effective February 10, allows Netflix to stream the films 15 months after their theatrical release, compared to 36 months so far. The streaming platform also benefits from 7 months of exclusivity. A favorable position granted in return for the promised investments in French cinema.
The Paramount+ SVOD platform arrives in France in partnership with Canal+
This is good news for the 7th French art. Netflix has pledged to invest 4% of its annual turnover generated in France in cinematographic creation, with a minimum investment of 30 million per year. A clause obliges Netflix to devote 17% of funding to works whose budget is less than or equal to 4 million euros. With the financing of 10 films per year, the American giant should largely contribute to the development of the sector in the course of the year 2022.
French cinema is delighted with this agreement
Eternal dissatisfied, Netflix judges “desirable to bring the media chronology back from fifteen to twelve months as soon as possible”. Whatever happens, it won’t be for this year. Netflix has already produced several French films with great directors. One thinks in particular of BigBug, by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Without respite, by Régis Blondeau, Loin du périph, by Louis Leterrier, or Dangerous Liaisons, by Rachel Suissa. Films stamped Netflix, which will be released later this year on the web platform.
This new agreement is very well received by the world of French cinema. In Le Film Français magazine, Richard Patry, president of the National Federation of French Cinemas, said that “This new counter for the production of French films is excellent news. Just like the fact that films co-produced by Netflix arrive in France in theaters ». For their part, the Society of Film Directors and the Syndicate of Independent Producers see a “historic agreement”.

This is a historic step for the American giant. Netflix who becomes the first SVOD platform to agree with the organizations of the cinematographic sector in France. The American platforms Prime Video and AppleTV+ also seem ready to negotiate with the profession. It is probably not not the case of Disney+.
