ChatGPT has already proven itself with its ability to have friendly conversations and even generate complex documents. But when it comes to creativity, people still seem to be in control. Nothing could be further from the truth: research at the University of Turku in Finland shows that these digital thinkers perform better on creative tests than humans.
The ‘Alternate Uses Task’ (AUT) was conducted on 256 volunteers and three AI chatbots. This classic test measures creativity by having people think of as many alternative goals as possible in a short time for everyday objects such as a rope, box, pencil and candle.
The team found that responses generated by chatbots scored significantly higher on average for creativity than human responses. ChatGPT3 always generated 10 ideas when there was no explicit restriction, ChatGPT4 generated between 7 and 8 ideas, and Copy.AI generated a variable number of ideas.
Still, the best human answer beat the best chatbot answer in seven of the eight scoring categories. The human brain excels at producing high-quality ideas, but sometimes cannot avoid less brilliant concepts.
Stronger together
What does this mean for the future of creativity? In the eyes of researchers, a promising collaboration is emerging between humans and AI. The goal is not to replace human creativity, but to enhance and complement it with the infinite possibilities that artificial intelligence offers. That said, it doesn’t mean we should leave creativity entirely to the computer.
