Who was wrong? It will be an expert report requested by the prosecutor, and accepted by the investigating judge, to establish the responsibilities in the accident of last April 16 which took place in Rome between the car of the Lazio footballer Ciro Immobile and an Atac tram, the Capitoline public transport company. It was Sunday morning just before 8 when the Land Rover Defender of the Biancoceleste captain hit the public transport of line 19 on the Lungotevere delle Armi near Piazza delle Cinque Giornate, diverting it off the tracks. Eight tram passengers, the train driver, the footballer and his two daughters who were in the car with him were injured in the collision. For this reason both Immobile and Valter Mannoni, the 58-year-old Atac employee driving public transport, are under investigation by the prosecutor for injuries. The investigating judge has appointed Mario Scipione as an expert. The probative incident to shed light on what happened will begin on 18 September.

traffic light and speed

There are several points to be clarified. First of all, the functioning of the traffic lights at the crossroads in Piazza delle Cinque Giornate. Both suspects claimed to have passed with the green light and the Roma Servizi per la mobility company stated that the traffic light complex worked well. Another point to clarify is the speed at which Immobile’s car was going. The footballer claimed that he was traveling at 50 km/h while according to the driver’s expert opinion he would have reached 70 km/h.

the developments

What could have ended as a road accident without serious consequences for the people with a contributory fault between the two drivers instead took an unexpected turn starting from June. In fact, Immobile asked the Atac for damages while in July the driver reported the footballer for road injuries. At this point, the Rome prosecutor’s office opened an investigation and requested a super-expertise and the investigating judge accepted the request.
