MARKETS ASIA/Mixed – Tokyo gives back yesterday’s gains

By Steffen Gosenheimer

TOKYO / HONG KONG (Dow Jones) — Despite clearly positive signals from Wall Street, trading on the stock exchanges in East Asia on Thursday was uneven. In the USA, the recent worries about problems in the banking sector receded further into the background after various support measures had meanwhile been implemented, and investors again took a more courageous approach to stocks. In Seoul, the stock barometer is slightly up, in Sydney the US template is followed with a gain of 0.9 percent.

In Tokyo, on the other hand, the Nikkei 225 index fell by 0.9 percent to 27,644 points after the previous day’s increase of around 1 percent. The fact that the yen continues to lose significant ground against the dollar does not help this time. However, traders emphasize that many stocks are trading ex-dividend, which is holding back the index. The Chinese stock exchanges are down 0.2 percent and Hong Kong 0.7 percent.

Among individual stocks, HK Hynix (+1.8%) is joining the rally of US chip stocks such as Micron and Intel in Seoul after Micron expressed optimism about the remainder of the year. The course of the semiconductor industry supplier Hanmi Semiconductor makes a leap of 5.0 percent and LX Semicon are more expensive by 0.8 percent.

In Hong Kong, CNOOC is down 2 percent. Participants speak of profit-taking after the oil company benefited from the sharp rise in oil prices last year and doubled net profit to a record level.
