Last weekend, 768 people were arrested at a protest on the A12, which was organized by the Extinction Rebellion action group. Rarely have so many people been arrested at one demonstration. In the days that followed, a fierce debate arose about the actions of the mayor and the police. Was it proportional? And are climate activists treated harder than, for example, angry farmers or corona protesters?
This Hague Affairs is about demonstrating. We investigate the right to demonstrate and try to find out how fairly it is applied. You will hear from Wafa Al Ali, Folkert Jensma and Karel Smouter how demonstrators have changed their tactics in recent years and how the authorities are struggling with this.
