Status: 10/19/2022 11:40 p.m

On Wednesday (October 19, 2022), Bayern Munich took revenge in the DFB Cup for their defeat in the Bundesliga and knocked Augsburg out of the competition with a 5-2 win in a thrilling game. Bayern’s noble reservist Eric-Maxim Choupo Moting showed another outstanding performance, contributing two goals and one assist to Bayern’s victory.

FC Augsburg again started with a lot of momentum and after just nine minutes scored their third chance to score in Bayern’s box. Elvis Rexhbeçaj brought in a pass to Mads Petersen, who with a well-placed left-footed shot from about 20 minutes hit the target flat next to the left post (9th minute).

The Swabian goal was the famous wake-up call for Munich: Leon Goretzka, Serge Gnabry and Alphonso Davies failed, however. Not so Choupo-Moting: After a pass from Gnabry, the Cameroonian ran almost to the baseline, and when everyone in the stadium and also Augsburg’s substitute keeper Tomáš Koubek expected the cross pass in front of the goal, the striker pulled the ball ice-coldly at the goal and duped the goalkeeper ( 27.). Just seconds later, Sadio Mané gave away the lead alone in front of Koubek.

Gnabry hits the bar

After the change of sides, which Augsburg was able to use to recover without conceding another goal, the record cup winner from the Isar increased the pressure. Gnabry hit the crossbar with an art shot, and a little later the attacker failed again with a big chance.

The Munich lead fell when Mané chased the ball away from Augsburg’s Carlos Gruezo in front of the Augsburg penalty area and Kimmich was able to sink the ball on the bottom right after a pass from Choupo-Moting (53′). The Cameroonian made it 3-1 with his second goal (59′) after substitute Kingsley Coman and Jamal Musiala combined in the Swabian penalty area.

Iago brings Augsburg back into play

After a good hour, in which coach Enrico Maassen’s team had invested a great deal and appeared to be knocked out standing, FCA reared up again. First Florian Niederlechner missed after a corner, then Bayern’s central defender Dayot Upamecano steered the ball unhappily into his own goal after a cross from Iago – the stadium in the Swabian metropolis was awake again.

Augsburg drew hope again, but when in the 74th minute Musiala wobbled Maximilian Berg in the 16 of the hosts and flicked the ball into the lower right corner with his left hand, the Munich team was back on top. Shortly before the end of the game, Leon Goretzka scrambled the ball next to the goal and missed Bayern’s fifth goal, Marcel Sabitzer also failed freely to Koubek.

The final point was set by Davies, who converted a perfectly prepared pass from Thomas Müller from about eleven meters.
