Anouk Vetter is in second place on Sunday after the first three parts of the heptathlon at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene. The 29-year-old Dutchman, who is a candidate for a medal, made an impression especially in the shot put.
Vetter put the bullet to 16.25 meters and that was a personal best. She thus set the highest score of all all-around athletes at Hayward Field Stadium.
The Olympic silver winner in Tokyo started the heptathlon well with a time of 13.30 seconds in the 100 meter hurdles and also took many points with 1.80 meters in the high jump.
Only Olympic champion Nafissatou Thiam has so far performed better than Vetter, who already won a World Cup medal in 2017. Then it was bronze in London.
The Belgian Nafissatou Thiam is currently in the lead.
Oosterwegel occupies sixth place
Thiam is the favorite for gold in Eugene and leads with 3,127 points. The Belgian won the high jump with 1.95 meters. Vetter is on 3,003 points and that is more than she had earlier this year after three parts at the prestigious heptathlon in Götzis. She sharpened her own Dutch record there to a final score of 6,693 points.
With Emma Oosterwegel, the Netherlands has another trump card in the all-around. The 24-year-old Oosterwegel, who surprisingly won the Olympic bronze in Tokyo, is in sixth place in the standings with 2,821 points.
The all-around athletes will finish their fourth part tonight at 3.30 am Dutch time, which is the 200 meters. On the second day of the heptathlon, the long jump, javelin throw and 800 meters follow.
