Van Vleuten wins Giro Donne for the third time
Annemiek van Vleuten won the Giro Donne for the third time on Sunday. The Dutch from the Movistar team had a safe lead in the general classification and did not have to worry much anymore for the tenth and last stage on flat roads. The stage was won in Padova by the Italian Chiara Consonni.
Van Vleuten (39) won the Tour of Italy for women earlier in 2018 and 2019. In 2020, she had to leave the race as leader two days before the end after breaking her left wrist in a fall. Last year the race did not fit in with her preparation for the Olympic Games. In Tokyo she took silver in the road race and gold in the individual time trial. Shortly before the Giro, Van Vleuten announced that she will continue for another year. Her next goal is the Tour de France which starts in Paris in two weeks.
