Werder Bremen apologizes to HSV for malicious tweet

Werder Bremen has lost sympathy points: After the final whistle, the club made fun of its archrival HSV with a Twitter post, caused a stir – and deleted the post shortly afterwards.

“Our tweet about the outcome of the game was completely inappropriate and unsportsmanlike,” read the latest tweet from Werder Bremen’s official club account on Twitter. “We know from our own experience what emotions are associated with relegation. We hope that there will soon be northern derbies in the Bundesliga again.”

The apology came after an initial post that has since been deleted from the account. In it, the newly promoted Bundesliga club made fun of the defeat of its archrival HSV shortly after the match between Hamburger SV and Hertha BSC.

The post featured a video of Werder’s promotion celebrations, showing fans in the Weser Stadium singing out loud over the stadium speakers: “See Hamburg, that’s how it’s done.” The club wrote about the video: “It would be really insensitive and not very sensitive if someone were to post this video now …”, followed by a wink smiley. In a second sentence, Werder then congratulated Hertha BSC on staying up: “See you next season in the Bundesliga.” The Berliners had previously won 2-0 at Hamburger SV, who now have to go into their fifth year in the second division.
