The IOC plans to nominate the host of the 2030 Winter Games at its General Assembly in Mumbai next year.
The head of the International Olympic Committee must decide by December which applicant the IOC wants to enter into concrete negotiations with, said the head of the umbrella organization Thomas Bach. So far, Sapporo, Vancouver, Salt Lake City and a joint bid by Barcelona and the Pyrenees region have been considered promising contenders for the Winter Games after next.
There are some “high quality proposals,” said IOC Director General Christophe De Kepper at the 139th IOC session. As part of the reformed selection process, the responsible organizer committee is working towards a host being able to be chosen in May 2023 in Mumbai, India.
A German bid for the 2030 games seems out of the question, especially since in 2026 a European host is already on the train in Milan and Cortina. Thomas Weikert, the new President of the German Olympic Sports Confederation, wants to push efforts to hold games in Germany again, but recently said about an application for 2030: “It may be too early because we don’t want to go swimming.”
