CBS: Almost one in ten young people receives youth assistance | Inland

Nearly one in ten young people received youth care in 2021. This is evident from figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS).

According to preliminary figures, 444,000 young people made use of youth care in 2021. That number will probably rise to 456,000 if a definitive calculation can be made. This means that 1 in every 9.7 young people up to the age of 22 received youth care in 2021.

Nearly 44,000 young people received youth care with residence in the past year, 21,500 of which were taken in by a foster family. The number of children in a closed institution falls to 1,815 young people. In 2020, 417,000 young people were still supported.

Within youth care, the large number of children and young people receiving help has been viewed with dissatisfaction for some time now. In this newspaper, director Olaf Prinsen of the sector association Jeugdzorg Nederland argued in favor of offering youth care less quickly. “A lot of things that we now problematize are just part of growing up. Not everyone who exhibits special behavior needs to undergo an assistance program,” he said earlier this year. Prinsen also argued in favor of organizing better care for children who are really not well off at home.

Incidentally, fewer reports are received about the latter group from the Safe at Home organisations, where people can knock on the door due to suspicions of child abuse. That number dropped by 8,000 to 120,000 reports; The alarm is raised less often, especially from the police, but also from youth care. The number of times that advice was given by Safe Home to victims, bystanders or professionals because of suspicions of domestic violence increased by almost 12,000.

In 5 percent of the reports received in 2021, there was an acutely unsafe situation.
