Confusing World Cup graphics: That’s what’s behind it

It comes up again and again at the 2026 World Cup: the so-called “match momentum”. But what exactly does this statistic actually measure – and is it really new?
Who plays the games? Football World Cup 2026 If you follow closely, you regularly come across a graphic with different colored deflections around a zero line. The name: “Match Momentum”. The statistics are prominently displayed by the TV channels and are intended to help you better understand how the game is going.
For many viewers, however, the question remains: What exactly does this graphic actually show? The company “inplayradar”, which calculates the value, clarifies.
What is Match “Momentum”?
The “Match Momentum” is intended to show which team is developing more pressure in a certain phase of a game. Unlike classic statistics such as ball possession or shots on goal, the key figure does not look at the entire game, but rather at what is currently happening on the pitch.
The idea behind it: Football games often happen in waves. Sometimes one team pushes the opponent back deep into their own half, then the other team takes control again. It is precisely these changes that “Match Momentum” is intended to capture.
How is the value calculated?
Numerous offensive actions are evaluated for the calculation. These include, among others:
- Goals
- Shots on goal
- the quality of conclusions (expected goals)
- Advances into the attack zone
- Flanks
- Corners
- Ball contacts in the penalty area
- Free kicks in the attacking third
- Possession of the ball in the opponent’s half
- Referrals
The time factor is crucial. The calculation is not based on the entire game, but on the actions of the past five minutes. The system continuously analyzes which team has recently created more offensive danger.
How do you read the graphic?
First, each team receives its own value between zero and ten. Zero means virtually no offensive threat. Ten represents maximum offensive activity.
The values of both teams are then compared. The difference results in the actual “match momentum”.
In the diagram this means: swings in one direction represent phases of pressure from the home team. Swings in the other direction show advantages for the away team. If the curve is close to the zero line, both teams largely neutralize each other. The graphic for the German opening win against Curaçao shows the superiority of the DFB eleven.
