The Canadian shows off his desire for revenge, but he disappointed in Turin and Spalletti is asking for a new nine. The weight of the 6 million salary and the other Openda flop

Jonathan David has no intention of giving up: he wants his revenge against Juve. Despite a disappointing start to the World Cup, a season in Turin that was clearly below expectations and Spalletti’s words that were often not very tender towards him, the Canadian center forward is convinced of his chances of relaunching in the black and white. A desire that could also be seen as a good intention, if it weren’t for the fact that, without his departure, CEO Carnevali would hardly be able to give the coach that much-desired center forward. Be it Sorloth, Kolo Muani or a flashback with the almost free Vlahovic.

David, a negative season at Juventus

The debut with his Canada against Bosnia at the World Cup confirmed the difficulties of the former Lille striker: a bad mistake in front of goal and a substitution half an hour from the end. With the consequence that the fans are starting to wonder if they shouldn’t prefer the almost homonymous Promise David as the starter. Almost a long wave of the difficulties experienced in Turin, where Jonathan had finished second place behind the cyborg Haaland in the ranking of the best scorers born since 2000, only to then show great character and, above all, technical limitations for the game requested by Spalletti. “He lacks a bit of ferocity inside the penalty area, because there are no spaces there and you have to go and cut them out, you have to take them away from your opponents – the Juventus coach reprimanded him on several occasions -. Is there a ball that can decide a match? You have to take it and ‘bam’! You have to get there with more force, but from that point of view we are not very bad or ferocious.” Thus, for the first time in his career the Canadian center forward ended the season without reaching double figures and on the fringes of the squad, with just one appearance as a starter since Vlahovic became available again after the injury.

Juve, Jonathan David wants to stay

Yet, Jonathan David has no intention of giving up: since the retirement of the Canadian national team, the attacker has filtered his desire not to leave Juventus and try to relaunch himself in the Bianconeri next season. The former Lille player, on the other hand, is aware that in the past, when he found himself having to deal with a new environment, he had a slow start, but then he always asserted himself. And he would like to do it in Turin too. Spalletti, however, is eager to have a new center forward by the end of the month and the Canadian’s salary (six million net per year plus bonuses), in addition to the impossibility of selling Openda outright, the other flop of Juve’s 2025 summer transfer market, limits the new player’s possibilities for maneuver at Carnevali. And it is difficult to imagine that the former Italian coach could be satisfied with David’s good intentions…
