Fabian Reese is not leaving Hertha BSC in the summer to fulfill his long-held dream of the Bundesliga. The previous Berlin captain is moving to relegated VfL Wolfsburg, which did not go down well with some fans of the Old Lady. Reese’s fiancée Johanna Grünewald is now making it public that the followers’ reactions also included hate comments.
Fabian Reese’s partner Johanna Grünewald reacted on Instagram to the numerous negative comments on social media that rained down on the couple after the footballer’s move from Hertha BSC to VfL Wolfsburg.
“The last few days have been difficult for me. Seeing how quickly shared memories can turn into disappointment, anger and sometimes even hatred,” wrote Grünewald in a story on Instagram: “People see headlines. They see a change. What they often don’t see are the thoughts, the conversations, the doubts and all the things that precede such decisions. Behind them are often many conversations, different interests and also the club’s plans.”
Not every decision can be “fully understood from the outside,” says Reese’s fiancée. Grünewald “underestimated” how “words can hit home.”
Hertha BSC receives millions for Fabian Reese
Bundesliga relegated team VfL Wolfsburg announced the signing of Fabian Reese on Wednesday. The 28-year-old signed a contract with VfL until June 30, 2030 and will receive the number eleven jersey, as the club from Lower Saxony announced.
According to media reports, the Wolves will pay eight million euros, while Reese will now pay a salary of three million euros, according to “Bild”. The Kiel native and former Holstein professional still had a contract with the Berliners until the summer of 2030.
“Fabian has been one of the strongest players in the 2nd Bundesliga in recent years. He is an absolute top performer and not only brings strong offensive qualities, but also an exceptional level of commitment, leadership and mentality,” VfL sports director Pirmin Schwegler was quoted as saying.
