Will club icon Martin Demichelis from FC Bayern take over the coaching position at RB Leipzig from Ole Werner? His former teammate Mats Hummels didn’t see the possible earthquake coming on the Saxons’ bench.
“I was very surprised when I heard about it,” said the BVB legend during the World Cup coverage on “MagentaTV”.
Hummels added: “Two weeks ago I played padel with Micho in Mallorca and congratulated him on his contract extension. So that really caught me off guard.”
Demichelis, who will play at second division club RCD Mallorca until 2028, is considered a hot RB candidate in media reports.
Rumors had recently been circulating that Werner was internally controversial despite RB Leipzig’s strong season in the Bundesliga, which ended in third place and thus a Champions League place. There was talk of two factions.
While those responsible in Leipzig would apparently like to continue with Werner, the decision-makers in the Red Bull Group are said to be leaning towards a change of coach.
Hummels confirms RB Leipzig “good season”
“I thought RB played a good season under Ole Werner,” said Hummels. “He led them back to the Champions League. There were a few ups and downs, but overall it was a positive season. I didn’t expect that changing the coach would be an issue.”
Demichelis is said to be close to signing with RB. The Argentine has an offer that he wants to accept. This is what “Radio Marca” and “La Ultima Hora” report. According to Sky, a final decision has not yet been made.
RCD Mallorca’s hands are probably tied in the matter because there is said to be an exit clause in Demichelis’ contract.
