Italian Championships: the deep goes (again) to Angelo Benazzi

In his small way, Angelo did something that is difficult to replicate. There are those who have won two consecutive WSOP Main Events and those who have done back to back at the ISOP a few months later. At the Italian Championships Angelo Benazzi makes the deep tournament his own

The ISOP season had seen the first two Main Event winners, two foreign actors. First Raz and then Bilan. It felt like a curse but then came the success of Andrea Corinaldesi who brought the Italian flag back to the world of the Italian Series of Poker. In the April stage, Angelo Benazzi, a Campione regular who had defeated the very young Rocco Mercatanti in the final heads up, emerged from the rich field. The last act of the season “transferred” the Main to the Deep. Let’s explain well. The flagship tournament of the ISOP was the 500, an event valid for the POY ranking. The winners listed above had triumphed in the Main ISOP which awarded the largest prize picture. The Italian Championships include a €990 Main Event which will elect the Italian champion. The “old Main” ISOP was the first event of the championships or the €500 Deep, given that the starting stack was quite deep. Well, the bracelet went again to Angelo Benazzi who, in fact, has never stopped since the last time. Nothing to do for the chip leader at the start of the final day, Vitaly Tevis, who was among the first eliminated at the final table. The last obstacle for Benazzi was Luca Frigerio, who ended up second place. Angelo started winning in April and continued into June. Who knows who will stop him….
