After the Tuesday show of De Oranjezomer, Hélène Hendriks suddenly had a phone full of messages. There had been something in her program that had escaped her at the table. “Almost drowned.”
Live television is unpredictable, but what appeared on screen on Tuesday during De Oranjezomer was of a different nature than a slip of the tongue or a technical malfunction. While Hélène Hendriks and her table companions were chatting unsuspectingly, atmospheric images were shown of the resort on Curaçao where the show originated.
Almost drowned
However, those atmospheric images were not exactly atmospheric: the viewer saw a child who went under in the swimming pool, and a father who immediately jumped into the pool to save him or her.
Hélène comes back to it on yesterday’s show: “I still have to tell you something, because yesterday I received all kinds of messages from people after the broadcast. There was an image….”
Saved by Dad
Hélène knew nothing about this during the broadcast. “Look, we are working here at that table and then people are shooting images that we do not see here at the table, but apparently there was an image of a child who was having a hard time in the water. He was eventually rescued by dad.”
She continues: “We made some inquiries and everything went well, but it is live of course. We were not given that, but I think it would be nice to indicate that.”
Well ended
Hélène is happy that it turned out well. “It will happen to you, because you see it every summer, these kinds of reports that things do end badly.”
Table guest Rutger Castricum: “The man who jumped in was resolute. He got there on time.”
Hélène concludes: “Yes, but it will only just escape your attention…”
