The boss of the leading world championship team on the eve of the first free practice in the Principality: “We have to give our all, it won’t be easy and nothing can be taken for granted. We were clear with Kimi and George”. A new rear wing appears on the W17

June 4 – 2.47pm – MONTECARLO (MONACO)

The action on the track has yet to begin but in the Principality the lively air of competition has already been palpable since Thursday. Among those, like Ferrari, who know they can have a sensational chance of victory right in Monte Carlo, and those, like Mercedes, who don’t seem to have the intention of wasting the chance to win even on the streets of the most famous street circuit in the world, bringing home what would be a fifth sensational consecutive success. However, it was team principal Toto Wolff who put his hands on Mercedes’ performance in the Principality, shifting attention to the Silver Arrows’ opponents at least for this weekend: “Monaco is always one of the most prestigious races on the calendar, there is a lot of history and solemnity around this event, but none of this changes our task: we have to work well right from free practice and be ready to give our all when it counts, but it won’t be easy.”

margins of error

The complexity, explains Wolff, comes precisely from the uniqueness of the historic track: “We face the weekend without taking anything for granted because Monaco is a circuit different from any other on our calendar. A car that has been competitive on other tracks is not guaranteed to be strong here too. The margins for error are small, the consequences are high and past performances do not always translate into results. We will have to give our best throughout the weekend if we want to maintain this pace.” The intention, however, underlines the team principal, is to try to exploit the decisive moments of the weekend: “Qualifying here in Monte Carlo is always exciting. With this new generation of smaller and more agile cars the challenge should be even more demanding between the contenders. To have a chance of victory on Sunday it is necessary to do well on Saturday, we know this and it will be the first objective for us. It will be an impressive show and we can’t wait to experience it.”

new wing

The team principal is focused not only on the development of the car, with the team presenting itself today in the Principality with a new rear wing designed specifically for this weekend with aerodynamic solutions that immediately caught the attention of its rivals, but also on the internal dynamics of the team after the challenge that saw its drivers, Kimi Antonelli and George Russell, as protagonists in Canada. “They know well what they have to do – said Wolff -. We were clear with them, they are free to fight but the priority is always the team’s result.”
