There is hardly any room left in the Sterre der Zee bookstore in the Kinkerbuurt between high stacks of second-hand books and overcrowded cupboards.
Suddenly the store’s survival after 35 years is uncertain. The rental contract with landlord Stadgenoot was terminated after the death of owner Jan van Eijk. The agreements made with him, for example a rental price on an anti-squat basis and a return of the store after a thorough renovation this summer, have automatically expired.
Tripling
And so a group of volunteers has emerged who want to take over the business. Stadgenoot is open to a new lease with the group, but with new conditions. The rent would almost triple, and cultural activities would also have to take place in the building.
“With your help, we will ensure that it lasts,” says volunteer Harrie Lindelauff through a microphone at an action being held this afternoon. Loud applause follows from enthusiasts and local residents of the store who came this afternoon to support the store.
