For the first time a boxer engine is used as a range extender in a serial hybrid configuration
At the end of 2025, the automotive giant Byd presented a new petrol engine: an innovative 2,000 cc four-cylinder engine in configuration boxers. This is an absolute debut and a world first, as it is the first opposed-cylinder engine flat-four designed exclusively for use in hybrid and electrified architectures. Unlike the classic boxer engines historically used by manufacturers such as Subaru And Porschedesigned mainly for pure thermal traction, the BYD boxer was created to be integrated with electric powertrains, with two great cards to play: a very small size and unprecedented silence.
HOW IT WORKS
—
The new 2.0 liter boxer Of Byd it is designed to operate predominantly in mode serial hybrid: its main task is to function as a generator to recharge the batteries that power the car’s electric motors. However, in specific conditions where additional power is required, the combustion engine can connect and directly provide drive torque to the front axle. The entire hybrid system is capable of delivering a maximum power of 272 horsepower And 380 Nm of couple. To optimize space and silence, BYD engineers have adopted some refined technical solutions. The engine is extremely compact, with an overall block height of just 420 mm, a feature that allows it to maintain a very low center of gravity. Use a system of dry sump lubricationa cooling architecture specifically designed for its flat shape and dual timing chains. To reduce mechanical noise, BYD implemented a special “sandwich” structure for the valve covers and engine ends. Thanks to the natural tendency of the boxer layout to cancel out vibrations, levels Nvh (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness, noise, vibration and harshness) declared are excellent: in idle or low load conditions, the engine is barely noticeable 1 dB noisier than electric motors, making its intervention virtually imperceptible while driving.
THE E4 PLATFORM
—
This powertrain was custom designed to blend into the e4 platform (also called Yisifang) by Byd, an architecture whose name summarizes the concepts of Electric, Efficient, Extreme, and Evolution. The core of this platform is a quad-motor systemwhich involves the installation of four independent electric motors, one for each wheel, powered by the now well-known Byd Blade battery. The independence of the motors allows for high dynamic control, with response times of just 10 milliseconds for each single wheel. This guarantees a torque vectoring extremely precise, enormously improving the handling and safety of the vehicle. The real novelty of the e4 platform, however, lies in the new driving functions that the four independent engines allow, such as the tank turn (the ability to rotate 360 degrees when stationary) and the crab walk (the lateral movement, or “crab walk”). Furthermore, the platform integrates redundant safety systems: if an engine or a component of the braking or steering system were to fail, the vehicle is able to instantly compensate with the other engines to maintain stability and continue driving safely.
BYD YANWANG U7
—
The first model to take this new 2.0-liter boxer on the road is the Yangwang U7a luxury super sedan launched by BYD’s premium brand. The car uses the boxer engine to solve space problems in the front compartment. On the U7, the heat engine is nestled in a “six-core” front module: in this narrow space the petrol engine, a generator, two electric traction motors (for the front wheels) and two electromagnets that are part of the DiSus-Z intelligent suspension system coexist. Officially launched in the first half of 2025, the Yangwang U7 is offered in China with a starting price of 628,000 yuan (approximately 76,800 euros) for the standard plug-in hybrid version, which becomes 708,000 yuan (approx 86,700 euros) for the exclusive four-seater variant.
