According to the works council’s assessment, the planned closure of the Zalando logistics center in Erfurt could affect significantly more jobs than previously assumed, as dpa reported on Thursday. The news agency refers to the chairman of the Erfurt Zalando works council, Tony Krause. According to this, more than 3,000 employees are affected by the decision of the board of directors of the DAX group. In addition to the permanent workforce, this also includes temporary workers and employees of external service providers, some of whom have been working at the location for several years.
The works council is now planning to invite everyone affected by the closure to a meeting to inform them about the current situation and possible further steps. A challenge is organizing a suitable meeting place for several thousand people. Many employees are unsettled and don’t know what will happen next for them professionally.
Support should come from the employment agency. From Monday she wants to provide contact persons for employees directly in the company. The aim is to provide quick and uncomplicated advice in the current situation. Due to the urgency, temporary employees should initially be supported.
The decision to close the large logistics location surprised the works council as well as state and local politicians last week. The Verdi union also expressed criticism of the company’s approach and sees economic reasons for abandoning the location, in particular the possibility of working more cost-effectively at other locations.
