WIESBADEN (dpa-AFX) – Whether frozen pizza or canned ravioli: more and more ready meals are being produced in Germany. In 2024, 1.7 million tons worth 5.9 billion euros were produced in this country, according to the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden. For comparison: five years earlier there were 1.4 million tons worth 4.1 billion euros.
There was a particular increase in pasta dishes: the quantity produced rose from 345,000 tons in 2019 to 539,000 tons in 2024, which means an increase of around 56 percent. The volume of meat dishes increased by 43 percent to 316,000 tons. An increase of 7.2 percent to 197,000 tons was recorded for vegetable dishes. There was only a decline in production in the quantity of fish dishes: according to the data, this fell by 7.2 percent to 22,000 tons.
Time spent preparing food has hardly changed in ten years
“Even though the range of ready meals has increased, people in Germany spend no less time preparing food than before,” said the statisticians. People aged 10 and over would spend an average of 41 minutes preparing meals and the associated kitchen work, according to the 2022 time use survey. Ten years ago, the average duration was almost identical (40 minutes).
There is a clear difference between the genders: “While girls and women spent an average of 53 minutes a day cooking, baking, setting the table and washing dishes in 2022, boys and men spent 29 minutes a day.” However, this difference was even more pronounced ten years earlier: According to the data, women and girls spent an average of 55 minutes a day preparing food, and boys and men spent less than half the time, at 24 minutes./jto/DP/mis
