The Ruiner primary school ‘t Oelebröd will remain closed all day today due to a wolf that was spotted near the school. Due to the slippery conditions, the primary school was supposed to start later, but after a wolf was spotted on an adjacent sports field, the school decided to remain closed today.
Bas Guchelaar, director of the Wolderwijs umbrella organization, confirms this. “That is really close to the school, so we had discussions. The director received the report, who contacted me. I then contacted the mayor, who in turn contacted the province. The police were also involved,” Guchelaar explains.
After consultation between various parties, a boa from the province was sent to the place in Ruinen where the wolf was seen. Students and employees were not yet present. Due to the slippery conditions, they would start at 10.30 am, Guchelaar explains. “All this happened around 9:30 am. And we knew that a lot of people would come to the schoolyard around 10:30 am.”
“We made the decision: how quickly can action be taken? We did not know how long the provincial boa would be there and how long this situation would last. In that short period of time we thought: there is a good chance that this will not be arranged before 10.30 am.”
And so, for safety reasons, the school decided to keep its doors completely closed today. “As a precaution. It is not on the schoolyard, but close to the schoolyard. We don’t want to take that risk.”
It is not yet clear how long ‘t Oelebröd will keep its doors closed. “We have made this decision for today. We expect that once the provincial employee has visited and assessed the situation, we can make an assessment for the short term and similar situations in the long term.”
