Two people were killed in two serious accidents on the N34 near Emmen and on the A28 near Spier at the end of the afternoon. In addition, several people were injured.
Due to the accidents, both the A28 and the N34 are closed to traffic for hours.
The A28 concerns the direction of travel from Hoogeveen to Assen. The N34 is closed in both directions at Emmen.
Around 4:30 p.m., two cars collided on the N34. According to a police spokesperson, one of the drivers was killed. The other driver and two other occupants of one of the cars were injured and taken to a hospital. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
Several emergency services arrived on the scene. A trauma helicopter was also called to Emmen. The cause of the accident is still under investigation. The police are also looking for witnesses and dashcam images.
Half an hour later something went wrong on the A28 near Spier. According to the police, at least two cars were involved in this accident. The driver of one of these cars was killed in the accident. Two people in the other car were injured and taken to a hospital.
An air ambulance was also called in for this accident. The cause of the collision on the A28 is not yet known.
The A28 is expected to remain closed in the direction of Hoogeveen to Assen in the coming hours. Traffic is being diverted on site. Rijkswaterstaat expects this to last until approximately 11 p.m.
In any case, the N34 near Emmen will remain closed for hours due to police investigation and recovery of the vehicles. Rijkswaterstaat expects the road to be reopened there around 9:30 p.m.
