The relegation-threatened second division soccer team Dynamo Dresden has filled the vacant position of sports director. Sören Gonther will take over responsibility for the sporting area at the bottom of the table from January 1st. The club announced a corresponding decision on Monday.
The time was deliberately taken “to make a decision that makes sense and promises success for the future,” said the chairman of the supervisory board, Michael Ziegenbalg. Gonther has proven his skills “both as an active player and in recent years as a manager” and “contributed significantly to the professionalization of the club” in Kassel. He also has “an excellent network” and knows Dynamo from his time as a professional player.
“I’m really looking forward to returning to Dresden,” said 39-year-old Gonther. The aim is “to achieve relegation with Dynamo and to further stabilize ourselves in the 2nd Bundesliga”. He is “burning for the task.”
Gonther played 294 second division games, including for SC Paderborn, FC St. Pauli and Dresden. Most recently, he was managing director of sports and finance at the regional league team Hessen Kassel. He is ending his work as a second division expert at the TV station “Sky”.
