A year after the fall of his regime, Syrian ex-president Bashar al-Assad leads a secluded life of luxury in Moscow and partly in the United Arab Emirates. Assad is once again taking ophthalmology classes, the profession for which he was once trained, in London, according to a family friend and sources in Russia and Syria. He would also study Russian. Assad fled Syria in December 2024 after rebels captured Damascus, ending five decades of Baathist rule.
