Pop star performs World Cup song
Live at the draw: That’s what’s behind Robbie Williams’ gesture

Seven and a half years ago, Robbie Williams showed the middle finger at the opening of the World Cup. At yesterday’s World Cup draw he came up with something again.
Robbie Williams and Nicole Scherzinger opened, the Village People closed. The show surrounding the World Cup draw was not just about football, but – in typical American fashion – a lot about entertainment. “Desire” is the name of the song that Robbie Williams and Nicole Scherzinger performed.
There was no such obscene gesture yesterday, Friday, but the British pop singer came up with something different. In a lyric at the beginning, Williams sang: “One thing unites us, the best is yet to come.” In German: “One thing unites us, the best is yet to come.” As he sang these lines, he crossed his arms on his chest and rubbed them as if he were cold.
But that wasn’t a gesture to signal that the air conditioning in the room was turned up too high. Williams simply celebrated England international Cole Palmer’s goal. He cheers just like that to show how “ice-cold” he is.
Williams is a big fan of the “Three Lions”, as the English national team is also called. The pop singer has high hopes that coach Thomas Tuchel’s team will return from the USA with the trophy.
But the Brits in Group L don’t have it easy. With Croatia and Ghana, two challenging opponents await the “Three Lions”. Only Panama is an easy opponent.
