In his first year in the second world single-seater category, the Italian from Piacenza arithmetically won the title, finishing second in the Future Race in Qatar
Leonardo Fornaroli became Formula 2 world champion in his first year in the category. The Piacenza native, born in 2004, finished in second place in the Feature Race in Qatar, won by the Frenchman Victor Martins: the result allowed the Invicta Virtuosi Racing driver to arithmetically close the conversation for the title. “You guys are the best,” he shouted to his team as he exited the car in the pit lane. Then he became emotional: “I can’t believe it, I can’t believe it,” he repeated. Since the F2 championship became a category world championship, coming under the aegis of the FIA, only two Italians had won the title before Fornaroli: Giorgio Pantano in 2008 and Davide Valsecchi in 2012.
