In principle, all 16 Regional Deals can get started now that the 16 covenants have been definitively established. Minister Keijzer of Housing and Spatial Planning wrote this to the House of Representatives. The Regional Deals were selected in February, after which the plans were further developed together with other ministries. In this sixth and final tranche of Regional Deals, the regions will receive a government contribution totaling 244.3 million euros. In addition, the regions contribute at least the same amount.

Together with the regions, the national government and the region are building a sense of community, social security and quality of life.

Minister Keijzer: “With these 16 new Regional Deals, we are continuing to build strong, powerful regions, so that all people in the Netherlands, regardless of the region where they live, have equal opportunities and can live happily. The collaboration between the government and the region is vitally important, with the regional tasks as a starting point – because every region is unique and deserves a tailor-made approach.”

Incentive for the region

A number of the 16 Regional Deals will now have a second (II) or even third (III) sequel. For these areas and their residents, this once again means a strong incentive for a future-proof region. The 16 Regional Deals are: Barendrecht-Ridderkerk-Rotterdam, Bonaire, Eemsdelta, Noordoost-Fryslân II, Noord-Drenthe, Foodvalley II, Noordoost-Brabant II, Parkstad Limburg III, Rivierenland II, Floriculture Region, Vital Wijken II, Values of the Green Heart, Waterland, Zuid-Hollandse Groeikernen, Zeeuws-Vlaanderen/ Zeeland and South Limburg II.

In concrete terms, the sixth tranche of Regional Deals concerns, among other things, the realization of new multifunctional outdoor areas where nature, agriculture and recreation come together; places to work, learn and enjoy (Foodvalley); bundling schools, sports and healthcare under one roof (Zeeuws-Vlaanderen/Zeeland); solutions for an increasing healthcare burden due to double aging and departure of young people (Waterland and North Drenthe); and improving water availability, quality and safety in Rivierenland.

Long-term programs

This sixth and final tranche with 16 new Regional Deals once again gives residents and companies an incentive for a better quality of life, living and working. The Regional Deals of this sixth and previous tranches will still be fully implemented in the coming years. The region and the government remain in intensive discussions to link the deals to long-term area-oriented programs, such as the NOVEX approach, the National Liveability and Safety Program and the National Vital Regions Program, or to their own regional agendas.

In addition, a study will start in 2026 into the lessons and success factors from six tranches of Regional Deals that could also be of value in the future. Since 2018, the government has been working with the regions to build a society where people feel at home and are ready for the future, with a total of 1.8 billion euros and more than 80 Regional Deals.
