Filiep Jodts, public prosecutor of the West Flanders public prosecutor’s office: “Despite the increased risk of being caught, we see a clear decline in mobile phone use behind the wheel.”
Road safety
The amounts collected from the amicable settlements flow partly to the state treasury and partly to the road safety fund. Through this fund, resources are allocated to, among others, the police, the FPS Mobility, the FPS Justice and the regions. The remaining amount will be further distributed among the local police zones.
Checks remain necessary
The figures show that the measure is effective, but distraction behind the wheel remains an important point of attention. Filiep Jodts, public prosecutor of the West Flanders public prosecutor’s office: “We continue to urge the police zones to carry out targeted checks on distraction behind the wheel, but also to raise awareness. Drivers must realize that they are endangering not only their own lives, but also those of others due to distraction while driving.”
“Distracted driving remains an underestimated risk with often serious consequences. Every year, up to 50 deaths and 4,500 injuries occur in Belgium due to distraction in traffic. Anyone who uses their mobile phone while driving puts themselves and others at risk.”
