Recommendations of the Editorial team

Three decades ago, an eight-part Beatles anthology revolutionized the world of music documentaries: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr told their own stories in “The Anthology” – in their own words. Now the Beatles anthology returns restored and reissued. Part 4 of the documentary series will be shown once on the big screen in Berlin on October 20th. ROLLING STONE is giving away two tickets each to five lucky winners.

Restored and reissued

The eight original episodes of the series trace the band’s journey, which began in Liverpool and Hamburg and soon captivated the whole world. The anthology revives music history – from Beatlemania, the formative performance in the USA, the band’s role as pioneers of the counterculture of the 1960s, their spiritual search in India to their disintegration.

The restoration for the reissue was carried out by Apple Corps, Wingnut Films and Park Road Post under the direction of Peter Jackson and Giles Martin. The latter also created new audio mixes for most of the music.

Musically, the “Anthology,” originally curated by George Martin and now remastered by Giles Martin, consists of three double albums of rare material. They offer an insight into the early development of the songs that are now considered classics.

Ninth episode with previously unreleased material

“Anthology” will be released in its new edition on November 26, 2025 exclusively on Disney+. It’s not just the restoration of image and sound that’s new: a ninth episode with previously unpublished material has been added. This shows McCartney, Harrison and Starr working on the anthology in the 1990s and reflecting on their time together as a band.

Fourth part in exclusive screening

The fourth part of the anthology also contains 13 previously unreleased demos and session recordings as well as other rare pieces. Two songs were also remixed: “Free As A Bird” and “Real Love”. The Beatles’ most recent song, “Now and Then”, is also included. All three singles were created from home demos that Lennon recorded in the 1970s, which were later supplemented with vocal and instrumental parts by McCartney, Harrison and Starr.
