Rob Jetten (38) from Uden has a chance to become prime minister. In the election exit poll, his party D66 won 27 seats. This appears to make D66 the largest party and they can take the lead in the formation of a new cabinet. The exit poll has a margin of error of 1, maximum 2 seats. Currently, the PVV and VVD are closely behind D66 with 25 and 23 seats.

“Today we achieved the best D66 result ever and are perhaps the largest party in the Netherlands,” party leader Jetten said in response to the exit poll. The party is in the lead with 27 seats, the PVV follows with 25 seats.

Something special
“We have just seen something really special and it will be very exciting, but one thing is certain: millions of Dutch people have turned the page. They have said goodbye to the politics of ‘it is not possible’. They opted for the positive forces and politics that allow us to look ahead,” says Jetten.

Jetten also points out that millions of Dutch people have chosen other parties. “I feel a great responsibility to not only be there for the D66 voters in the near future, but for all Dutch people. We will do everything we can to show all Dutch people that politics and the government can be there for them. That they can think big again and do big again so that the Netherlands can move forward. To achieve this, it will require political leadership from all positive forces in the political center to seek cooperation in the near future.”

‘Completely fine’
VVD leader Vincent Karremans would find it “completely fine” if D66 party leader Rob Jetten became prime minister, “but that is a matter for tomorrow”.

Karremans also believes it is quite possible that the VVD will become part of a cabinet with a D66 prime minister. “Why not? We have always indicated that we would like to see D66 as a cooperation partner,” he said on Wednesday at his party’s results evening in The Hague.

Grew up in Uden
Jetten was born in Veghel and grew up in Uden. Nowadays he lives in The Hague with his partner. In 2018, when Rob Jetten was elected party leader, his father said he was “Proud, absolutely proud”.
