Sandro Wagner relies on young talent in Augsburg – and with success. Two homegrown players in particular are now arousing interest at the DFB and abroad.

Also strengthening the young talent: Sandro Wagner was aware of this goal when he was appointed the new coach of FC Augsburg. And Wagner has delivered in the last few months since taking office.

In the 1-1 draw against Cologne, Wagner relied on two young players in the starting line-up who are also interesting for the DFB: Noahkai Banks and Mert Kömür. Banks and Kömür come from Augsburg’s own offspring and have recently been able to significantly increase their market value. However, when you look at a possible future in the DFB team, things get complicated.

Noahkai Banks also has US citizenship – and according to “Sport Bild”, the USA is already promoting a nomination for the 2026 World Cup. U21 national coach Antonio Di Salvo is said to have called Augsburg several times.

Mert Kömür recently wore the German U21 jersey twice. However, according to the report, there are said to be voices in the family environment that would support a decision in favor of Turkey. After Kenan Yildiz and Can Uzun also chose Turkey in the past, the DFB hopes that Kömür will go the German route – and that they won’t suffer the next failure in recruiting young talent.
