The expected decision came after the bad start of the season for the Belgrade team.
Red Star, one of the Euroleague representatives, announced that they parted ways with coach Ioannis Sfairopoulos after starting the 2025/26 season with three consecutive defeats.
The official statement made by the club included the following statements: “Following a joint meeting between club president Željko Drčelić, sporting director Milan Tomić, club management and head coach Ioannis Sfairopoulos, it has been decided that Mr. Sfairopoulos will no longer serve as head coach of the Red Star first team.
“This decision was taken with a common understanding, in line with the interests of Red Star during this period.”
WON FOUR CUP IN TWO YEARS
Sfairopoulos was appointed head coach of Red Star on October 21, 2023. During his tenure, he won four trophies with the Serbian team: the ABA League title, two Radivoj Korać Cups and the Serbian League title. He also managed to qualify for the EuroLeague Play-In stage with his team last season.
The Greek coach played 145 matches in his two-year tenure, achieving 90 wins and 55 losses.
“IT WAS A NAME THAT WENT IN HISTORY”
The club’s statement also included the following statements: “Red Star would like to thank coach Sfairopoulos for everything he did on behalf of the club. He represented the club in the best way with his professional stance both on and off the field. He contributed to the organization rising to a higher level. We wish him health, success and the best in his future career.
“Thanks to the trophies won, Ioannis Sfairopoulos has left an indelible mark on the history of the club.”
The club also thanked assistant coach Vassilis Geragotelis for his contributions, effort and dedication at Red Star.
