STransbourg (France), 8 Oct. (askanews) – The European Parliament has voted on a proposal to ban the use of meat-related terms, such as “burger” and “steak”, to market plant-based foods. MEPs supported, with 355 votes in favor and 247 against, an amendment wanted by the People’s Party which – within a proposal for a regulation on strengthening the position of farmers in the food supply chain – bans the use of denominations of animal origin for products derived from vegetable proteins.
The provision will have to be negotiated with the Governments of the 27 countries gathered in the Council but then, perhaps as early as 2028, plant-based producers will no longer be able to label their plant-based foods, market leaders for the health, animal rights or sustainable trend, as “veg burger”, or “soya burger”, or “lentil sausage”.
Today these names are allowed, as long as the packaging clearly indicates that they are foods of plant origin.
