At computer store Soncom in Assen it has been a lot busier than usual lately. Every week around forty to sixty extra customers arrive, all with a laptop or computer cupboard under the arm. They also ask the same question en masse: “Can you transfer my computer to Windows 11?”

Since a while it has been known that you should update a laptop or computer to Windows 11, the new Microsoft operating system. Where it goes without saying with some devices, others are a lot more difficult. And some devices are not even suitable for the new system.

“It is not that your device no longer works when you don’t pass,” explains Jeroen Buurman of Somcom. “But, for example, no more product improvements are made and security updates are put on the back burner. So the advice is to switch, because sooner or later you just have to leave.”

So many people have that done by a computer store. There they are busy with the device for an hour. “What we encounter is that people have been using their computer for ten years and no longer know the passwords. We have to find them out first. And sometimes we are unable to install the latest version because a program stops the update.”

In the store are dozens of PCs and laptops in a row. On several screens it can be seen that the new update is being installed. “It is a lot of waiting,” says Buurman. It has been known for quite some time that you have to update your device, but a large proportion of users have waited.

“Prayer behavior,” laughs Buurman. “We saw that earlier when Windows 7 went to Windows 10, but we have not experienced as extreme as now.”

According to him, what makes the problem bigger is that part of the devices is too old and does not support the new operating system. These people are a lot more expensive. They must purchase a new one to be optimally secured again.
