Vigar sustained a heavy brain injury last Saturday during the game against Wingate & Finchley. He collided with a hard surface next to the field unhappy and had to be treated on site by medical staff. He was then taken to the hospital by a helicopter, where he was held in an artificial coma.

Although he underwent surgery on Tuesday, Vigar died of his injuries on Thursday. That tragic news shared his team on social media. “The many reactions show how much Billy was appreciated and loved in football. His family is devastated that this happened during the sport he liked to practice,” said Chichester City in a statement.

Vigar enjoyed his education at the famous Arsenal Academy in Hale End, where he came out for various youth counts. It didn’t come to a debut in the first team. He later played with Derby County, Hastings and Eastbourne Borough, before he landed this season at Chichester City in the Isthmian League Premier Division.

Arsenal expressed support earlier this week: “Everyone at Arsenal sends love and support to Billy and his loved ones in this difficult time.” Also from the lower English divisions, statements of support from clubs and fellow players, who described him as a talented player and beloved teammate.

Out of respect for Vigar and his family, Chichester City postponed the next league match.
