Israeli Staff Chef: ‘Expansion offensive in Gaza City will soon start’

The Staff Chef of the Israeli army Eyal Zamir announced on Sunday, when visiting the Israeli troops in the Gaza Strip, that the operation in Gaza city “will soon” start. “Today we approve the plan for the next phase of the war,” he said.

The intention is to increase the attacks “until Hamas is definitively defeated”. The army will “use all its capacities: on land, in the air and at sea”.

Zamir also said that the operations have achieved their goals so far. “Hamas no longer has the capacities it had before the start of the operation; we made them a heavy blow,” he said. At the same time, he emphasized that the Israeli army “has a moral duty to get the hostages home – both the living and the dead”.

The army staff chief had previously opposed this operation because he believes it has great risks.

The plan to expand the Gaza war provides for the conquest of the city of Gaza and the nearby refugee camps. The Israeli safety cabinet has previously set the light on green. However, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and Israel still live in the area would like to move them.
