A few weeks ago we moved to California with our two teenagers. In the weeks before they go to the high school, we had many conversations about being young in the Netherlands and in America, including about the substance use of young people. “In my class, there was a sniffed boy who also dealt cocaine,” my eldest said cheerfully. “He really wanted to work at the Ministry of Defense. After his exam, he registered and was therefore rejected …” He was quiet for a moment. I nodded understanding, just like his father and sister. But he continued: “… because of his peanut allergy.”
