This month it is 81 years ago that Anne Frank arrived in Camp Westerbork. To reflect on that, Kamp Westerbork Memorial Center is organizing a special program around her story in August.
Anne Frank was arrested on August 4, 1944, together with her family and the other people in hiding from the Secret Annex. They were then taken to the house of custody in Amsterdam and interrogated. On August 8 they arrived in camp Westerbork. A few weeks later, on September 3, 1944, she was put on transport to Auschwitz with her family.
“August is a busy month with many visitors, including families with children. Everyone has a different background and for us the story of Anne Frank is an opening, her story is very familiar and therefore to explain well,” says historian Christel Tijenk, head Knowledge Center at the Kamp Westerbork Remembrance Center.
Young visitors up to and including 15 years of age receive a free copy of the entire month of August The Secret Annex. In addition, special theme drives are organized under the title ‘Anne and the others’ . During these tours, extra attention is paid to the history of Anne Frank and her family in camp Westerbork.
