A convertible stands for freedom and driving pleasure on sunny days. But if you park the vehicle with open cover, you risk much more than just wet seats.
Insurance coverage is not guaranteed
Insurance protection depends significantly on whether the vehicle is secured against external influences and theft. According to the VPV Versicherung, parking with an open hood can be rated as grossly negligent in the event of damage. In the case of theft or vandalism, there is a risk that the partial casco performance is shortened or completely refused. If you leave the vehicle unsecured, according to the insurer, act grossly negligent, especially if the interior remains freely accessible and valuables are visible. Damage caused by rain or vandalism may then no longer be considered insured.
Legal aspects
From a legal point of view, parking with an open top is not expressly prohibited. However, ยง 14 of the road traffic regulations requires that parked vehicles must be secured against unauthorized use. If a convertible is openly and unassired, this can be seen as a violation of this obligation. In such cases, the police can assume gross negligence, especially if the vehicle remains unattended over a longer period of time. The HUK-Coburg points out that objects such as navigation devices or valuables are not replaced in the interior if the vehicle was not sufficiently secured. When the hood is open, there is usually no insurance cover for the loss of such objects.
Recommendations from practice
A closed cover is considered an essential criterion for the proper securing of a convertible. Even if the vehicle is only left briefly, for example when shopping or recharging, the roof should be completely closed. Doors and windows must be locked in order to meet the requirements of the insurers. In addition, the interior should be free of visible valuables. It is particularly risky to park a convertible open and unattended in a public location. Sudden swings can cause considerable damage, especially on electronics or sensitive interior designs such as leather seats. There is also no complete security in busy areas, since an open interior remains easily accessible.
