Worries about cyclists Michael Matthews. Signs of pulmonary embolism were found at the Australian team Jayco Alula. He has to cancel his start at this year’s Tour de France, and there may be a long break.

Cycling professional Michael Matthews from Team Jayco Alula cannot take part in the Tour de France as planned. This is not enough: for the time being, the team doctors ordered a complete break as a “precaution”.

As the team announced, signs of pulmonary embolism were diagnosed at the 34-year-old veteran on the edge of a recent height training camp. Matthews’ health condition is “stable”.

After the first examination, more should now follow, according to the racing team. “The medical team now examines the extent of the problem and the possible cause to define a secure and optimal recovery process for the athlete,” says a statement.

“Thanks for all the nice news, I need to write back a few more days and process everything,” wrote Matthews on Instagram: “My condition is ok and I will relax completely. That will just take some time.”

Matthews won the Eschborn-Frankfurt bike classic in 2025

The classic driver had prepared for his ninth participation in the Tour de France in recent weeks. He had shown himself in good shape.

On May 1st, Matthews won the 62nd edition of the Eschborn-Frankfurt bike classic. At Milan-Sanremo he fought fourth place, and he finished fifth at the Amstel Gold Race.

The mixed world champion of 2024 won the points at the Tour de France in 2017, which allowed him to cover up the green jersey. Overall, Matthews won four stages on the tour during his career, four at the Vuelta and three at Giro d’Italia.
