While US President Donald Trump mobilizes a further 2,000 national guards to Los Angeles to act against protests against the immigration and customs authority ICE (Immigrations and Customs Enforcement), criticized the California governor Gavin Newsom Trump’s “Thea -Remal Setup Sections of Hardening”. He said that the president had “exceeded a red line in this country”.
Newsom reacts to obstacles – “weakness disguised as a strength”
In a massive escalation of the federal interference, Trump signed an order on Saturday that authorized the use of national guards. 300 of them were sent to LA without the consent or requirements of the city or state authorities. The National Guard was last activated in 1965 without the consent of a governor when President Lyndon B. Johnson surrounded the segregationist governor of Alabama, George Wallace. And troops sent to protect civil rights demonstrators on the march from Selma to Montgomery.
In conversation with “Pod Save America” on Monday, Newsom reacted to the president and his government’s threats. He accused Trump of fueling chaos. To waste valuable resources. And militarize the streets of the city. Border protection officer Tom Homan said on Monday that there is currently “no discussion” about the governor’s arrest. However, he did not rule this out either. When asked whether Homan Newsom should arrest, Trump replied: “I would do it if I was Tom. I think it’s great. Gavin loves attention. But I think that would be a great thing. He did a terrible job.”
Newsom countered Trump’s statements in the podcast interview with the words: “I could never have imagined that the President of the United States says something like this about a political opponent.” Despite the threats, the governor was defiant. “Can’t we just get it behind?” And added: “They are only weakness that camouflages themselves as a strength. It is a role -playing game.”
Warning of militarization and dangers to civilian population
Newsom warned that Trump deduct members of the National Guard “from tasks in forestry, the protection of endangered communities in summer and during the forest fire season”. And they “remove emergency services that we have set up to combat the fentanyl smuggling”. The governor described Trump’s arrangement as a “theatrical display of hardness by a president who is not accountable. This now has a red line in this country.”
“We need peaceful protests. But we now have elements that deliberately donate chaos and put people at risk. This is my greatest concern when we start militarizing our streets. And they know that,” says Newsom. “Trump knows that. That is exactly what he wants. He wants this confrontation and this friction. And I just pray that we can protect people. And that everyone thinks while protesting peacefully.”
