The 1. FC Köln will start the new Bundesliga season without coach Friedhelm Funkel. The 71-year-old would have liked to continue, but does not feel enough approval.
The 71-year-old, who led the Cologne team to promotion in the last two season games, will no longer stay in the club. The coach told the “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger”. Funkel said that he did not feel the 100 percent approval in the committees.
Not an easy decision
“I really did not make the decision easy. I would have loved to stay FC coaches. But unfortunately it doesn’t make sense so,” Funkel is quoted. While the new FC sports director Thomas Kessler would have liked to continue to work, the backing in the committees was not said to have been large enough.
Funkel: “Thomas Kessler would have liked to do this with me, but he has only been officially a sports director since Friday and of course I can’t make it up for it. I would have loved to do the task and also felt a lot of support from the team and the great fans, but apparently it looks a bit different in the committees and the president. But unfortunately it is a shame.”
