Despite complaints, Wimbledon’s Sam Hutchinson continued to play – and even scored the decisive goal. It was only later how serious it really was.
In the 1-0 win of the AFC Wimbledon at Grimsby Town, 35-year-old Sam Hutchinson secured fifth place in the fourth-class English League Two and thus participating in the play-offs of the third highest English league. After the final whistle, the focus was on another topic. Because: Hutchinson had actually suffered a heart attack during the game.
The defensive player described the incident in an interview on the club website. He felt pain, he said. Nevertheless, Hutchinson continued – and even scored in the 53rd minute. After the game, his wife pointed out that he did not look healthy in an interview. When the adrenaline waned in the team bus, the chest pain became clearer. Then it went straight to the hospital.
“They told me that I had had a heart attack. I was in the hospital for five days and was examined,” said Hutchinson. In London, the Englishman received a stent – a small tube that is supposed to keep an open or blocked vessels open. He had already suffered the heart attack in the sixth minute of the game, the Englishman said.
In the meantime, he is on the way of improvement, said Hutchinson. According to the treating doctors, nothing stands in the way of continuing his active career.
