45 years of Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors: Timelessly American

Free-for-all, Stevie Nicks versus Lindsey Buckingham, John versus Christine McVie, and “Daddy” Mick Fleetwood did a truly Herculean job as mediator.

But then it was worth it. Four top ten hits that were part of the untouchable narrow dance fumble party canon well into the 80s (“Go Your Own Way”, “Dreams”, “Don’t Stop”, “You Make Lovin’ Fun “) and still sweeten every classic rock radio hour today, as well as well over 30 million copies made the album one of the best-selling ever.

And that is no accident. State-of-the-art in the studio, with clever, varied vocal parts by the two opposing chanteuses Nicks and McVie, who harmonize very well together, the album brought a laid-back, relaxed, sparkling high-end west coast rock that sounded so timelessly American, as only emigrants have always been able to do.
